Yes, Abby Lee Dance Company is a real place and has been operating since well before the start of Dance Moms. They do have a competitive team that has varying levels of difficulty, but the academy also hosts recreational classes for students who wish to dance without the added expenses and more intense schedule.

My daughter Sienna started dancing with the Jamie Lee Dance Academy two years ago in September at the age of 10. She had moved from a very small market town dance school and had been taught the BTDA curriculum. It was a big change for her to move to a larger school and a diffterent curriculum – studying ISTD.

Now, Dance Academy was a little cringey at times — but it had a lot of heart. The characters were fun, extremely relatable and it was incredible to watch them perform all those complicated dance sequences.
